The Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Kurdistan is one of the oldest and most influential in the region. Established in 1992, it was the first department within the College of Agriculture to admit students in the associate degree program in Animal Production Technology. Currently, the department has 11 faculty members and offers programs at the undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. levels in areas such as Genetics and Breeding of Livestock and Poultry, Poultry Nutrition, Animal Nutrition, and Physiology of Livestock and Poultry. The department benefits from advanced laboratories including animal and poultry nutrition, microbiology, genetics, biotechnology, and physiology as well as research farms, such as a dairy farm, goat breeding farm, poultry houses, a quail breeding center, an incubation hall, and a beekeeping research farm. These facilities support hands-on training and innovative research. In efforts to internationalize, the department admits international students across all specializations. In 2018, it signed a partnership with Raperin University in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, admitting 14 international undergraduate students for the first time. Additionally, a Bachelor’s program in Laboratory Animal Science was introduced, with future plans for a veterinary school. Faculty and students have also participated in research and training exchanges in countries like Denmark, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Austria, and Spain. These initiatives are helping to elevate the department’s academic standing and global presence. |
