About the Department of Soil Science and Engineering
The Department of Soil Science and Engineering at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Kurdistan, was established in October 2009 with the objective of training specialized and efficient human resources in the field of soil science and responding to the scientific and research needs of the country's agricultural and natural resources sectors. The department commenced its academic activities by admitting students at the undergraduate level and subsequently took a significant step in developing postgraduate studies by launching a Master's program in three specialized fields in 2011.
Currently, the Department of Soil Science and Engineering is recognized as one of the active and dynamic departments within the Faculty of Agriculture, boasting experienced faculty members, relatively well-equipped specialized laboratories, suitable educational and research facilities, and extensive interaction with scientific and executive centers. The department plays an effective role in cultivating competent graduates in fields related to soil resource management, sustainable land conservation and utilization, and interdisciplinary research, and is advancing the scientific and practical status of soil science in the region and the country.
Message from the Head of the Department
Soil, an inanimate yet foundational element, lies beneath our feet, playing its unparalleled role in the continuity of human life in a meaningful silence. This role extends from ensuring food security to preserving environmental health and achieving sustainable development. In a world facing challenges such as the depletion of natural resources, climate change, water crises, and soil erosion, attention to the science of soil is an undeniable necessity.
The Department of Soil Science and Engineering at the University of Kurdistan, by leveraging the capabilities of its specialized faculty members, diverse laboratory facilities, effective communication with research and executive centers, and the recruitment of interested and talented students, pursues a dual mission: educating a new generation of soil specialists and producing indigenous knowledge based on the climatic and ecological needs of the region.
In its path of scientific development, the department places special emphasis on topics such as soil resource management, soil erosion and conservation, land suitability assessment, sustainable agriculture, the principled utilization of water and soil resources, and the application of modern technologies such as remote sensing and GIS. Furthermore, its applied research activities, in collaboration with organizations like the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, Natural Resources Organization, Department of Environment, and knowledge-based companies, demonstrate the department's practical and problem-oriented approach.
It is hoped that through the continuous efforts of the faculty members, diligent students, and the support of the university and related institutions, the Department of Soil Science and Engineering at the University of Kurdistan will become one of the country's scientific hubs in the field of soil science, particularly in the western region.
Wishing success and dynamism for all who are devoted to the land and soil of this nation.

Active Fields and Specializations of the Department
B.Sc. in Soil Science and Engineering
To supply committed and specialized human resources in the field of soil science and to achieve self-sufficiency in the sciences and technologies related to soil, land reclamation, and soil pollution, it is necessary to train specialists who can, by utilizing their knowledge and experience, contribute to the country's economic development and growth by increasing agricultural production.
They will also be active in planning and directing the proper utilization of agricultural and horticultural lands, soil and water conservation, land improvement, and environmental protection. Graduates of the B.Sc. program in Soil Science are also qualified for roles such as teaching in agricultural high schools and employment in agricultural and soil and water research centers as soil and water analysis specialists, plant nutrition and fertilizer recommendation experts, soil and land surveyors and assessors, and soil specialists in landscaping and greenhouse management.
They can also work in technical and engineering firms for soil and water, consulting engineering companies in soil and water domains, private laboratories, as well as in laboratory positions at agricultural colleges and faculties. According to the educational regulations for the undergraduate program approved by the Supreme Council for Planning, the duration of the B.Sc. program is four years, which students are typically able to complete within this timeframe. Currently, there are 98 undergraduate students enrolled.
In this program, students become familiar with the core concepts of soil science, including soil genesis and classification, soil physics, soil chemistry and fertility, and soil biology.
