Report on the Participation of the University of Kurdistan in the Sulaymaniyah Exhibition, Kurdistan Region

The Fourth International Exhibition for Agriculture and Food Industries was held from the 17th to the 20th of December 2025, at the International Fairground in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. The event featured extensive participation from companies based in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and other countries in the region. Numerous firms from the manufacturing, food industry, knowledge-based, and academic sectors presented their latest achievements to the public. The University of Kurdistan, as the sole participating Iranian university, established a dedicated booth to showcase its capabilities as an international academic institution. At the university's booth, several new varieties of irrigated and rain-fed wheat, barley, potato, chickpea, rapeseed, camelina, and quinoa were introduced, and the latest research findings related to these cultivars were presented to visitors.

On the sidelines of the exhibition, Dr. Farzad Hosseinpanahi, a faculty member of the Department of Plant Production and Genetics at the Faculty of Agriculture and the Director of the university's research farms, delivered a lecture outlining the capacities of the University of Kurdistan to the students and attendees. Furthermore, professionally produced video presentations of Kurdistan Province, the University of Kurdistan, and its research farm, prepared by the university's Public Relations Office, were displayed and received with considerable enthusiasm by the audience. Additionally, twenty-five prominent book titles from the University of Kurdistan Press were introduced to visitors.

Her Excellency Ms. Begard Talabani, the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Kurdistan Region, visited the University of Kurdistan's booth, where she was familiarized with the university's activities and expressed her interest in collaborating. Subsequently, a meeting was held with her deputy, Dr. Razgar Hamad Khidr. During this meeting, a report on the state of agriculture in Kurdistan Province and the scientific potential of the University of Kurdistan to address agricultural challenges at various levels was presented. The report was well-received by the Deputy Minister, and it was agreed that, in cooperation with the Agricultural Research Center of the Kurdistan Region, the groundwork would be laid for the University of Kurdistan's presence and involvement in resolving the agricultural issues of the region.

Furthermore, meetings were held with the head of the greenhouse owners' union of the Kurdistan Region, several investors from the agricultural sector, and a number of distinguished researchers from the region, resulting in agreements for mutual cooperation.

In another notable development, the university's representative was selected as a chosen member of the exhibition's press conference, providing another valuable opportunity to promote the University of Kurdistan. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the university's participation was formally recognized with the presentation of a plaque of appreciation.

During this scientific mission, the university's representative also held meetings with the heads of the Sulaymaniyah Agricultural Research Center, the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Sulaimani, and the Agricultural Polytechnic Center at Sulaimani Polytechnic University. These discussions led to preliminary agreements on conducting joint research projects, with the understanding that initial proposals would be exchanged between the parties in the coming months.

This scientific visit marked a distinct experience for the University of Kurdistan in the international arena and yielded significant achievements, most notably the enhanced introduction of the university to an international audience. It is hoped that in future exhibitions, the University of Kurdistan will have an even more effective presence, showcasing a diverse range of products and services from its departments of horticulture, animal sciences, food industries, landscape architecture, hydrology and water equipment, plant protection, and biosystems engineering, thereby playing a more active role on the international stage.

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Kurdistan, as one of the university’s first and most experienced faculties, has played an effective role in developing higher education, expanding applied research, and training specialized human resources in agriculture since its establishment. The faculty began its educational activities in 1991, coinciding with the founding of the University of Kurdistan, as one of the three initial and mandatory faculties required for the university’s formation. From the outset, it held an important position within the university’s scientific structure. The Faculty of Agriculture initially operated under the name Agricultural Training Institute and admitted students at the associate degree level. With the gradual development of activities and the establishment of educational groups in 1997, this complex was upgraded to a faculty. Finally, in 1997, in line with the development of the university's scientific structure, it continued its activities independently of the Faculty of Natural Resources.Currently, the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Kurdistan provides a dynamic platform for education and research in agriculture, supported by appropriate educational and research infrastructure. The faculty's physical space includes approximately 8,742 square meters of educational, laboratory, administrative and service areas, 1,200 square meters of equipped greenhouse space, and 805 square meters of workshop space. The faculty comprises 10 specialized educational departments: Animal Science, Plant Production Engineering and Genetics, Plant Medicine, Horticultural Science and Engineering, Water Science and Engineering, Soil Science and Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension and Education, Biosystems Engineering, and Food Science and Industry. The Faculty of Agriculture, with its 72 academic staff and 18 administrative and laboratory personnel, provides a scientific, dynamic, and developing environment for educational and research activities. Among the key field facilities and infrastructure of the Faculty are its educational and research farms. The Dehgolan Educational-Research Farm is situated on 50 hectares in the Dehgolan Plain, adjacent to the Sanandaj-Hamedan Highway. This farm comprises two independent plots and includes educational and production land, broiler and egg-laying poultry units, a meteorological station, educational and support buildings, and adequate water resources. It plays an important role in practical education, agricultural research, and animal husbandry. The Dushan Educational-Research Farm, covering about 10 hectares, is located near the city of Sanandaj and next to the village of Dushan. This farm features productive agricultural land, a cattle breeding unit, a food industry laboratory, a bio-system shed, water pools, and educational and support facilities, providing an effective platform for students' educational and research activities. The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Kurdistan, with its emphasis on high-quality education, applied research, effective interaction with executive departments, and focus on sustainable agriculture and food security, plays an important role in the scientific, economic, and social development of the region and the country.
